Research Institute of Veterinary Genetics and Selection
The first Russian Research Institute of Veterinary Genetics and Selection was founded on April 12, 1991 at the State Agrarian University. The founder of the Institute is Doctor of Biological Science , professor, honored scientist of Russia, academician of agricultural education, Petukhov Valery Lavrentyevich, who has become the first chief of the Institute.
The Institute has been founded on the basis of the Department of Farm Animals Breeding and Genetics, Immune Genetics and Cytological Genetics laboratories.
Among the heads of the Department were famous scientists: academician, state prize-winner Ovsjannikov Alexander Ivanovich (1947-1961); associate professor Parshikov Vladimir Alekseevich (1961-1973); honored scientist of Russia Ipatov Pyotr Petrovich (1973-1980); professor Petukhov Valery Lavrentyevich (since 1984). They were educators of best teachers at the Animal Breeding Department and research workers of the Institute.
The first educational, research and production centre “Selection, Genetics and Biotechnology” was set up at Novosibirsk State Agrarian University.
At present the centre consists of the Research Institute of Veterinary Genetics and Selection; departments of Veterinary Genetics and Biotechnology, Farm Animals Breeding and Genetics; laboratories of immune genetics, cytological genetics, veterinary genetics, ecological veterinary genetics, biotechnology and animal selection. Also there are branches of departments at the Cytology and Genetics Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the State Plant “Pervomaisky” (Novosibirsk region), at the firm “Kudryashovskoe” (Kemerovo region).
The Institute was founded to integrate scientific and educational activities at higher educational institutions. The main purposes of the Institute are: to train scientific and pedagogical specialists in the field of selection, genetics, biotechnology for higher educational institutions and research institutes of Siberia and the Far East; to conduct fundamental and applied research ; to advance teachers’ qualification and prepare specialists of high qualification – Candidates and Doctors of Science.
